Concept & Inspiration
Pirates Week has always been a celebration of Cayman’s rich maritime history, bringing excitement, adventure, and a splash of mischief to the islands. But in 2018, we wanted to tell a different kind of pirate tale—one with a modern mission. Instead of searching for gold, these pirates had a new bounty in sight: plastic waste polluting our oceans.
The theme, "Pirates Against Plastic," was born from the growing concern about marine pollution and the need to raise awareness in an engaging, unexpected way. What better way to do that than by having the very symbols of the sea—pirates themselves—turn into protectors of the ocean?
Design & Illustration
The Choice of characters in "Pirates Against Plastic" cleverly blends Cayman’s wildlife, pirate lore, and environmental messaging.
THE HEROES
Represent Cayman’s native wildlife—the endangered blue iguana and iconic sea turtle.
Reimagined as pirate defenders of the ocean, tying conservation to the adventure of Pirates Week.
